What a high floor does for a stay
Dubai Marina has over 200 residential towers, and most apartments offer waterfront or skyline views. In a block of thirty storeys the floor you pick sets how much of that view you get. A tower with 336 homes also spreads its guests over many landings. Noise levels in busy parts of the Marina vary between buildings, depending on floor level and orientation. Both are worth asking about before you book.
The first 48 hours
Land at Dubai International (DXB) and the plain way to the tower is one taxi leg from arrivals. Uber and Careem cover the Marina well, and RTA street taxis are easy to flag along Marina Walk. A reception desk serves residents at the door. Visitor parking is available but tight at peak hours, so a friend who drives over does better to take the tram.
The first evening needs no planning. Cafes or restaurants share the site with the homes, so dinner can be downstairs. For the first shop, Waitrose has a branch in Dubai Marina Mall. The mall has a pharmacy too.
The next morning belongs to breakfast. The Scene and The Coffee Club are breakfast names around Dubai Marina Mall, with Carluccio's alongside them. Afterwards the Marina Walk promenade runs along the water for about seven kilometres, so a lot of daily movement happens on foot. The XLine zip line and yacht rental are among the other things to do along the Marina Walk.
Who uses what in the building
A couple has the spa for an hour, the swimming pool for residents, and a barbecue area for the evening. Between those, the weekend is covered without leaving the tower, and the evening can even start on the barbecue area before dinner downstairs. Parking for residents sits in the building as well, so a hired car has a place to rest.
A family uses the building differently. The play area for children handles the late afternoon, and a three-bedroom home gives parents a door to close. Someone travelling alone for work picks a studio, and the gym inside the building covers the early hour before the day starts. Maintenance services are provided at the building, which matters on a long stay.
On a longer stay you may want a change from the in-house gym. F45 and Go Eclipse are in Dubai Marina. Wellfit is there too. Squash and badminton courts are at Marina Promenade.
Home plans for a night or a month
The mix runs from studios to three-bedroom plans, with one-bedroom and two-bedroom homes between them. A studio suits one person on a short trip, while a one-bedroom gives a couple a separate door. The two-bedroom fits two couples or a small family, and the three-bedroom is the plan for a larger family or a group of friends. Stay a month and the pool and the gym turn into a routine, with the spa as the treat at the end of the week, which a small flat can carry only if the building around it does the work.
The road, the canal and the tram
Dubai Marina connects to Sheikh Zayed Road, a busy highway through the city. Marina roads fill up on weekends and public holidays, and again during school hours, so those are the times a driver notices.
RTA water taxis cross the canal from Dubai Marina Mall and Marina Walk, and from the promenade. Uber and Careem are widely available in Dubai Marina alongside regular taxis, and several bus routes run through the area.
Two Red Line stations serve Dubai Marina. Dubai Tram has 11 stations serving the Marina and JBR, and the tram connects to the metro at DMCC station. The Dubai Marina tram stop connects with the Sobha Realty Metro station, so the last leg is a short change and not a taxi.
Where the district came from
Emaar Properties developed Dubai Marina, which is also known as Marsa Dubai. The community is built around a 3.5-kilometre man-made canal and began taking shape in 2003. The Dubai Tram opened in November 2014, and it now lets you reach the beachfront from the Marina without a car.
Schools and a mosque
There are no schools inside Dubai Marina. Emirates International School Meadows and Dubai British School Jumeirah Park are named nearby, as is International School of Choueifat in Al Sufouh. Masjid Al Rahim is a prominent mosque nearby. It seats up to 2,000 worshippers.
Dinner by the water
Mama Zonia and Papas Dubai are among the places to eat in Dubai Marina, along with City Social and Attiko. Bar Du Port is another. District 8 serves modern international cuisine, and Fresh Fish Restaurant covers seafood. A seven-floor dining complex over the water and a zip line from JBR to the Marina Mall terrace are among the attractions around the Marina.
Bluewaters on a free afternoon
Meraas built Bluewaters Island on reclaimed land across from JBR. The island opened in November 2018. A pedestrian bridge links it to JBR, so the island can be reached on foot. Island Brunch runs at Bluewaters Island on a year-round listing, across the water from JBR.
Next door at JBR
JBR has 40 towers, 35 residential and 5 hotels, set directly on the beach, whereas the Marina's towers surround a canal. You can walk across The Walk, a promenade of restaurants and cafes with shops between them, to reach the shoreline, and beach access is free. JBR Beach is the closest beach. It is often reachable by tram or a short walk, with water sports and sunbathing.
A nursery, a clinic and a dog strip
Blossom Marina nursery sits on the Marina Promenade in Beauport Tower and follows the British EYFS framework. Mediclinic and the Dubai Marina Walk Clinic are within reach of the Marina. Medcare Medical Centre, MBF Health Square and Aster Xpress Clinic serve the JBR area. Playgrounds are dotted through the district, and one grass strip on the way to the Zero Gravity beach club allows dogs on a lead.
What to weigh before you book
It suits you less if you want a quiet street. Peak-hour traffic, limited public parking and noise are the main trade-offs in Dubai Marina, with few entry and exit points and noise near The Walk.
