A block this size, and who it suits
Shapoorji Pallonji International built Imperial Avenue, not Emaar. It holds 424 units. Reehan 6 holds 48, about a ninth of that figure, so the pool and the reception desk see far fewer people. If you are travelling alone or as a couple, that quiet is the first thing to weigh. Studios and one-bedroom apartments in Downtown suit single professionals, while larger units suit small families or couples.
From the gym to the barbecue, in the order a day runs
The day starts in the building gym. That saves you the 0.47 km walk to UFC Gym. By noon the swimming pool is the better place to be. In the summer months that matters, because the water is inside the building and not a taxi ride away. You can swim before the afternoon heat and still be back at your desk within the hour.
Landscaped gardens surround the building, so there is lawn to cross on the way out. A play area keeps children busy through the afternoon, and you can sit in the garden and keep an eye on them while the gym and the pool take care of the adults. When the heat drops, the barbecue area turns the same garden into a place for dinner with the family.
Who answers the door at night
A reception desk covers arrivals, and security and CCTV cover the building after dark, which counts when you come home late from the Boulevard. The reception desk, the security cover and the maintenance service together mean the block is looked after even when you are out all day. Parking is part of the building if you have hired a car, and the car stays under cover while you use the bus and the metro. Maintenance services are provided at the building. A tap or a cooling unit is a phone call rather than a project.
The first evening, door to dinner
Check in at the reception desk and drop the bags. Spinneys is 0.24 km from the building, close enough to buy meat or vegetables and carry them back for the barbecue area before the sun has gone. Nobody needs a car for the first night.
One, two or three bedrooms for a longer stay
A one-bedroom suits a stay of a few nights. A two-bedroom gives you a second room to work in over a month, so the desk and the bed need not share a wall. The three-bedroom gives a family room to spread out. A laundry service is offered at the building, which stops one suitcase setting the pace of the week. If you hire a car for the month, the parking in the building keeps it out of the street.
Dubai International to the door
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is 19.5 km from the building, about 21 minutes by road when traffic is light. Downtown has direct access to Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Road, so the last leg is a single taxi ride from arrivals.
Heavy traffic at peak hours is the one real cost of the district, because the area remains one of the busiest in the city. A midday landing sidesteps most of it.
A bus stop at the gate, the metro across the bridge
The nearest bus stop, South Ridge Tower 1, is 40 metres from the building, so the first leg of any trip starts almost at the entrance. RTA route 27 runs between the Gold Souq and The Dubai Mall.
The metro and the cool walk to the mall
The Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall metro station is 1.58 km from the building. From the station a covered, air-conditioned bridge leads into The Dubai Mall without stepping outside, which turns a July errand into a cool one.
The abra boat on Burj Lake
The water transport stop at Al Wajeha Al Maeyah MTS, 0.76 km from the building, puts an evening abra boat ride on Burj Lake, in front of Burj Khalifa, within an easy walk.
Old Town after the towers
Outside Old Town, high-rise contemporary towers dominate the skyline, so the low roofs here are a change of pace you notice on the first walk. Before 2000 the ground under them was called Umm Al Tarif. Today Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, lined with restaurants, cafes, hotels and residential buildings, has pedestrian pavements along its length, so a stroll from the cluster to dinner stays on foot. Souk Al Bahar and a table facing the fountain
Souk Al Bahar, 0.64 km from the building, has over 100 shops plus restaurants and cafes next to the Dubai Fountain. A bridge joins it to The Dubai Mall. Its restaurants face the fountain, and several cafes inside the mall look onto it as well.
Burj Park when the day cools
Burj Park opened in 2010 beside Burj Khalifa. It is open every day from 9 in the morning to 11 at night. It is a gentler hour than the mall.
A table on the Boulevard
Leila, a Lebanese restaurant, occupies Claren Tower 2 on the Boulevard, and Al Hallab Bab El Bahr serves coastal Lebanese food at 29 Boulevard. Al Bayt, a Middle Eastern restaurant, sits at lobby level of Palace Downtown. You can walk back along the pavements afterwards, and the building is never far.
An evening at Dubai Opera
Dubai Opera opened on 31 August 2016. It is a dhow-shaped building in the Opera District that converts between theatre, concert hall and flat-floor layouts for up to 2,000 people on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, which makes a night out here a walk along the same pavements as dinner.
Pharmacy, clinic and hospital
If someone falls ill, Supercare Pharmacy is the 0.51 km errand and the Medx clinic is the 0.79 km walk after it. Mediclinic, at 1.03 km, is the nearest hospital, and Mediclinic Dubai Mall has an on-site pharmacy and an on-site laboratory.
Children, a cinema and the school question
KidZania is 0.72 km from the building, and inside it children try more than 70 real-life jobs. That makes a wet afternoon easy to fill. On a longer family stay, Jumeirah English Speaking School and Citizens School both follow a British curriculum and serve Downtown families.
What to weigh before you book
It suits you less if you want the sea at the door, or a large park on the doorstep. Downtown has fewer of both than suburban areas such as Arabian Ranches or Dubai Hills. The nearest beach is 1.96 km from the building, and Mercato Beach and Jumeirah Public Beach both sit within a 20-minute drive of Downtown.
